I’ve got a new construction house. On closing day, the yard surrounding the property was just bare soil. I want to grow a clover lawn, so in early May I sowed Dutch white clover across the front of the property. I watered well until the seeds germinated, then cut back quite a bit.

Now 4-5 weeks later, about half of the square footage is covered in wonderful, tall, luxurious clover (and it’s flowering, so the bees are happy). But the clover is not taking in the rest of the area. In these spots, the seeds sprouted weeks ago but have not progressed from there.

As per typical new construction, the soil has low organic matter. I amended the top 1-2" with compost prior to sowing.

What’s crazy is I’ll get a 4 sqft patch of thick clover, but then nothing is establishing in the surrounding area, even though coverage was good and I can see little sprouts.

Any idea what I need to do to fill in the rest of my lawn?

Technical info:

– Zone 5a

– Soil pH 7.4 to 7.7 as measured by my county extension office

– Soil is rich in P and K but lacking N, as noted by the same analysis report

– The clover seed is a fresh batch from American Meadows that comes with an inoculated coating

– Weather has been very moderate so far this spring/summer. Highs in mid-70s and lows in the low-50s.

– No real weed competition. I’ve been chopping and dropping any weeds that do arise.
