I’m slowly planting out a food forest as I clear off an area of my property that’s overgrown with invasive species like Chinese privet, mimosa, English ivy, and nandina. It’s a slow process, since I’m doing it by myself and by hand, but I’m making progress. I’ve been focusing primarily on planting native edibles, which so far include pawpaws, peaches, elderberries, blackberries, sunchokes, groundnuts, and muscadines, with blueberries and mulberry to be added in the near future.

I’ve started considering adding some non-native species to add a bit of variety, if only in containers or beds in the yard around the house. But I don’t want to repeat the well-intentioned mistakes of the past that resulted in privet, nandina, mimosa, kudzu, and English ivy being such nuisances in my part of the world. There aren’t really any laws or regulations against planting much of anything in my area, but that doesn’t mean much since my state government is pretty useless. I’ve been looking into maybe goji berries, but I’m seeing mixed info as to whether they’d be invasive in my area. Another thing I’ve considered is some kind of currant, though I’m not sure how well they’d actually grow here.

Does anyone have any recommendations for fruits or berries that grow well in 7b/8a but that won’t out-compete with the native species? Or should I just stick to natives?
