I have the opportunity to plant a field previously used for hay in a permaculture orchard. At least, that’s what I’m trying to turn it into. While it’s a great opportunity to expand my farm, I don’t think traditional fruits (apple, cherry, plum) will grow well here since it holds water fairly well, low water table, silt loam type soil. I have done cover cropping and rotational grazing (sheep, chickens, rabbits) for a few years. I already laid out rows 14’ apart and have been planting perennial herbs and flowers as an understory for future bushes and trees, hopefully fruits. Paw paws? Elderberry? Grape? Honey berry?
